Feeling a Bit Tipsy

By Georgia Osten
We were on one of our dates to the Island, one we had postponed several times. You never know when you may be needed to babysit or celebrate one thing or another. We moved our reservation a couple of times to accommodate other happenings. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like we’re all that busy or popular, but this month other things kept coming up, causing us to change our plans. When the time finally came, we jumped at the chance.

Oh, I remember one reason we had to change our plans. It was because we lacked our favorite pet sitter. She was going out of town, not a big deal, we just have a preference. We like to leave Norie in charge.

We had a leisurely breakfast at the Sunflower before we headed back ‘across the pond’ the next morning. Maezy was delighted to see us when we got home.

Norie told us Maezy didn’t want her treat last night. Note: I make Maezy’s treats out of plain yogurt, bananas and peanut butter and freeze them. We looked at each other and just shrugged our shoulders, it’s not like Maezy to turn up her nose to her after-dinner treat. Norie said she had to hold it up to her nose to get her to eat it, she finally obliged.

All this time, I guess she knew we were talking about her, she kept wagging her tail and dancing around all of us. Strange Creature!

The conversation took another path, and then Norie said “hey, those are fancy little cups you put her treats in now.” “Fancy little cups, they’re just cupcake papers,” I said.

All of a sudden, my husband went to the freezer and pulled out a bag of treats. Not Maezy’s treats, but the Rum Chata Pudding Shots! “Is this what you gave her,” he said.

Oh my goodness, no wonder she didn’t want them! No wonder she was acting so giddy! We laughed and laughed.

The other night, we had a Birthday dinner to go to in Houston, so we asked Norie to come over to feed Maezy her dinner and let her out, knowing we’d be a little late.

Same thing, dinner then a snack. But this time, Norie knew which treat to give her, and after all, this time I had labeled the Rum Chata “snack” bag.

Lo and Behold, Maezy remembered and refused to take another treat from Norie. So, on the Eve of Halloween, Be careful from whom you accept treats … you never know.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you. Email: [email protected]
