The other day, my five year old grandson asked me where’s my fire hats? I must admit, I was a bit confused until he followed up with, “Nana, do you put out fires with a fire hose?” Of course, my answers were “no.” But he kept on. “Do you drive the fire truck?” I really get it, because I have an office at the Fire Department, I must be a fireman.
This prompted my son-in-l aw, who is prone to a bit of sarcasm from time to time, to start in. He said, “I knew it would be dangerous when you took that job.” Carrying on, “I could just hear you answering a 911 call … “No dear, it doesn’t sound like you’re in need of care, when you can simply pick up the phone and call in. Why not just take a couple of aspirin and see if you feel better, I bet you will …”
It didn’t stop there when he heard all the questions Pierce was asking. Paul, then, began to elaborate on What If I were allowed to drive the fire truck and try to put out fires. Geez, no respect, I’m telling you.
The three “middle kids,” I call them: Michael(8), Dax(6) & Addyson(11) were speculating on “What, exactly, does Uncle Matthew do?” Their descriptions: he always dresses nice, his hair is always cut and groomed, he drives a really nice vehicle, he goes to meetings, and so on. “Well, he must be a weather man.” All, “how exciting! But what channel?” “Where can we tune in to see Uncle Matthew?” So, they asked him what channel he was on? Roaring laughter by all! He then proceeded to tell them he sells Dell computers for a living. All chins dropped.
It should be obvious why these guys are so inquisitive about what grownups do. The “Middles” have a Dad we ALL admire. Michael, we love you and miss you!
