Serenity on the canal

On the other side of the Peninsula, it’s a whole different way of life. It’s the canal side…drive on over to take a look at Crystal Canal RV Resort sometime. Lined with beautiful Mexican Fan Palm trees, these lots are meticulously kept. There are 63 prime canal spaces, all with easy access to the bay. And if you want to keep your boat high and dry, there are boat lifts available for monthly rental. These lots

Fishing Rollover Pass

By Capt. Mike Williams
IRONIC IRONY–In the spring of 1981, I became a field tester for L@S BAIT COMPANY IN LARGO FLORIDA. My job was to design different lures and color patterns, then field test those lures to see which lures work BEST for the surf and bays of the Galveston Bay Complex. One of the lures I designed and field tested in and around ROLLOVER

Groundhog vs. alligator

By Brenda Beust Smith
Punxsutawney Phil can breathe easier. Big Al agrees. Six more weeks of winter. It’s not that we don’t believe the famed groundhog. It’s just that, here in Texas, we gardeners think an alligator has a better perspective for us. This is important, after all. It’s hard to argue with Al, who – at 1,000 lbs – is the largest alligator in captivity. He’s living out a comfortable

By Brenda Cannon Henley
Toppling the best produced, highly budgeted, and well advertised movies from the No. 1 spot in America on this past weekend is a truly patriotic film, Lone Survivor. According to Terry Jung, executive director of the Lone Survivor Foundation headquartered in Houston, more than $38 million dollars came across the counters of movie theaters throughout

Ringing the Bell

John Speich and Maryanne Rogers ringing the bell for the Salvation Army on Saturday at the Big Store. Our Bolivar bell-ringers raised just over $600. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who put money in the Red Kettle. The Red Kettle Christmas Campaign enables The Salvation Army to provide food, toys and clothing to over 6 million people during the Christmas season and helps more than 34 million Americans recovering from all kinds of personal disasters nationwide. Maryanne Rogers to run for County Judge

Maryanne Rogers has filed an intent to run as an Independent Candidate for Galveston County Judge. “I am running as an Independent so I can better serve the people of the County instead of the Political Party.” stated Maryanne Rogers, “there needs to be an independent voice on the Commissioners’ Court.” She needs 500 signatures on her Petition to place her name on the ballot as a

Carmen Schultz turning 83

Carmen Schultz will turn 83 on December 4, 2013. Yet as this photo by Gerry Lang proves, she is as lovely and young as ever. Perhaps the 80s are our new "middle-age." Way to go, Carmen!

Kara Kurtz weds Chance Kraft 10-12-2013

This is “another one” of those 5 years later stories, except more precisely 5 years and 1 month later. A little more than 10 years ago, Kara Kurtz became my best friend in Bolivar. She, her father Norbert and brother Kenan moved here from Houston in 2001 and operated the Bait Camp at the Ferry Landing. For a while, they also had a Bait Camp at Seivers. It was a glorious time with unbelievably jumbo shrimp

Kiss-Kiss Fish

Take Coconuts, 55 women, add free-flowing wine, Larry, Mo & Curly, and 9 colors of paint on a paper plate and what do you have? Well, I’ll tell you! It’s called Painting With a Twist and it was a grand party hosted by Anne Willis of Swedes and conducted by Donna & Jerry Mittendorf. Donna’s helpers, Susan and Anya, led the painting project with ease and charm. The tables and easels and ergonomic chairs

Hog Wild

Looks like we’ve gone to the Hogs. Early last week, rumors began to spread about the Feral Hogs on the Peninsula. No one had seen them yet, but several yards from Sandy Shores to Pat’s Tires had been torn to shreds during the night. Thursday morning we received a call from Mary Ann Rogers, telling us to come by and get some pictures. Pat and Mary Ann set out bait the night before. I asked

Remembering Ike

It’s still hard to believe five years have gone by since Hurricane Ike swept across our Peninsula, leaving such devastation and tearing our lives apart. Those of us who decided to evacuate, watched on with grief as we heard the news of the destruction. Some experienced awful conditions even at our evacuation points. Those who “rode out the storm” were lucky to have survived, and boy, do they have

Wedding on the Beach

“If you want to know how much I love you, count the waves.” Beach weddings are very popular for couples in love. It doesn’t get much more serene and romantic as saying your special vows under the warm sun and sound of crashing waves in the background. Bride Angie and Groom Brian shared “sandy toes and salty kisses” as they said ‘I do’ this past Saturday. Angie has a love for horses and

Keepin’ the Coast clear

Enjoying a day at the beach for many means sinking your toes in the sand with the crash of waves as your sound track. All too often we encounter the unsightly and unwelcome trash and debris, cluttering our good time. This is a worldwide issue, but helping to combat the problem here on Bolivar is Keepin’ It Coastal, a foundation created by Mike and Stacy Grubbs, dedicated to a mission –

It’s Gold for Betty and Chuck Williamson!

Betty and Chuck Williamson will soon be a golden couple. They celebrate their 50th anniversary on August 17, 2013. Their children have planned a special party for that day. Then, on August 18, Betty and Chuck will renew their wedding vows after the Sunday morning service at BayVue United Methodist Church. The celebration will continue with refreshments in Fellowship Hall. Congratulations to Betty and Chuck! Maybe they will share their secrets for 50 Golden Years with the rest of us.

Captain Bryan Brawner, with CrystalBeachCharters.com, took a few days to fish some fresh water in Lake Travis. "It gets some bad press with the low water levels, but we had an awesome couple days of fishing." Stay tuned for more on that.

Keepin it Coastal schedules first Beach Clean-up

“Keepin It Coastal” is a new Facebook page created as an effort to exploit the beauty of our natural resource, and reduce the amount of trash left behind by beach goers who don’t understand the far reaching implications of their actions.

“We have an issue here in Crystal Beach TX related to beach goers leaving to much trash on the beach. And although we understand its impossible to keep the beach

The Clue of the Raven Feather, Ch. 2

By Madeline Morphew
Chapter 2: Lots of Questions and Very Few Answers
Angelica hobbled in, one step at a time. Captain Haddock and TinTin still showed surprise on their faces for a few seconds before TinTin said, “Here, let me take your bag.”
Angelina smiled at TinTin, “Thank you! I’ve wanted to get rid this crazy bag all day!” She let go of it and gratefully handed it to TinTin. Once they were inside Nestor shut the door, took the bag, and went back to his household duties. Noticing she still had her coat on, the Captain said, “Let me take your coat.”

Mission Accomplished

By George Throop
Washington, D.C.
I may say “mission accomplished” above; however, the original goal of the mission that brought me to the road was accomplished long ago. I left home with the intention that if the Walk could even inspire one person to make one positive change in life–to take one personal step

The Clue of the Raven Feather

By Madeline Morphew
Chapter 1: Visitor at the front door
Jarvis McBride was a careful person.
He had everything under control, always in straight line, order. A pistol was tucked into his brown long coat, money of different countries in his wallet and even a passport in his pocket. Driving in his black automobile he felt like he should be, safe and secure. But even driving down the quaint countryside road, there was

The trip that was not meant to be

The Prengers were headed to their 60th High School Reunion…or so they thought. Ed and Barbara Prenger of Port Bolivar were planning to attend Barbara’s reunion to Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama. It was going to be quite a relaxing adventure on the wide open water. It would take approximately 7 days each way, cruising at day along the Intracoastal Waterway to Mobile, and
